JAKARTA (MKRI) — Central Papua governor-vice governor candidates 1 Wempi Wetipo-Agustinus Anggaibak have filed a petition challenging the 2024 Central Papua gubernatorial election results to the Constitutional Court (MK) on Friday evening, December 20, 2024 at the Court’s main building. In the petition, they alleged that the Central Papua Provincial KPU (General Elections Commission) had committed violations in the recapitulation process.

“[The petition] concerns the organizer’s—KPU’s—intervention, the noken system* was applied to the election. The community had agreed to cast their votes, but there were changes at the polling stations upward. It was done by the KPU—the subdistrict elections supervisory committee, everyone was in on it. We faced difficulties when lodging a report to Bawaslu (Elections Supervisory Body),” said the pair’s legal counsel Hendrik Tomasoa. The noken voting system is carried out by communities in Papua, either through public agreement on vote allocation or through the delegation of votes to a tribal leader.

The candidate pair have also reported it to Bawaslu, which then recommended a delay of the recapitulation by the Paniai KPU. “We have coordinated with Bawaslu, but there was not enough time to act. There was a recommendation by Paniai Bawaslu to delay the recapitulation by the Paniai KPU due to the issue—the change to the votes,” he explained.

The Central Papua Provincial KPU has certified 122,246 votes for candidate pair 1 Wempi Wetipo-Agustinus Anggaibak, 106,664 for candidate pair 2 Natalis Tabuni-Titus Natkime, 502,624 for candidate pair 3 Meki Nawipa-Deinas Geley, and 373,721 for candidate pair 4 Willem Wandik-Aloysius Giyai.
