JAKARTA, MKRI – It was a late Friday night, December 13, 2024, and the first floor of Building 1 at the Constitutional Court (MK) remained bustling with activity. In recent days, the atmosphere at the Court had been far from ordinary. Regional head candidates from various regions of Indonesia, accompanied by their legal representatives, gathered to file petitions challenging the results of the 2024 simultaneous regional election result dispute (PHP Kada).
Some legal representatives, entrusted by the candidate pairs, stood in an orderly line, patiently waiting for their turn to be called by the petition registration officer. Others queued to consult with the officer for further guidance.
The Constitutional Court officers on duty were equally busy assisting justice seekers. They carefully reviewed the files and evidence submitted by the petitioners before submiting them into the Electronic Case Service Information System (Simpel). Meanwhile, the Information Technology Team, working during the second shift, remained on standby to address any issues with the system or network.
According to observations by the MK Media crew, similar to the previous night, the activity in the petition registration room grew more intense as midnight approached. As the night progressed, legal teams arrived with stacks of documents, either to revise their petitions or submit additional files. However, this surge in activity did not correspond to a significant increase in the number of cases, which rose by only three compared to the tally from Friday morning. This was largely due to the fact that nearly all General Election Commissions (KPU) across Indonesia had completed their tasks of recapitulating and determining the vote count results for the candidate pairs.
The list of the 2024 regional election result dispute petitions on the Court’s website showed 283 petitions have been lodged so far, 16 on governor election, 218 on regent election and 49 on mayor election. Out of them, 136 were filed online through SIMPEL, while the other 147 were lodged on site.
