JAKARTA (MKRI) — The Constitutional Court (MK) swore in the Constitutional Court Ethics Council (Majelis Kehormatan Mahkamah Konstitusi or MKMK) for 2024 on Monday, January 8, 2024 at the hall of its second building. Based on the Constitutional Court Regulation (PMK) No. 1 of 2023 on the Constitutional Court Ethics Council, the Council shall consist of three people comprising one constitutional justice, one public figure, and one academic with background in law.
The three council members took their oaths before Chief Justice Suhartoyo—Ridwan Mansyur represents active constitutional justices, I Dewa Gede Palguna represents public figures, while Yuliandri represents academics with a background in law. Their term of office starts January 8 to December 31 this year.
After the swearing-in, Chief Justice Suhartoyo said in his remarks that the establishment of a permanent MKMK is a priority. The MKMK not only serves to supervise the constitutional justices and respond to reports, but also as a bridge between the Court and the public and to help disseminate information about the Court’s contributions to the public.
“So, there is a reciprocity between the MKMK and the Court, relating to changes that the Court needs to do and/or maintain. Therefore, there is communication between the two to bring about progress to the Court,” the chief justice said during the inauguration, which was attended by Deputy Chief Justice Saldi Isra and the other constitutional justices, first chief justice Jimly Asshiddiqie, Secretary-General Heru Setiawan, Chief Registrar Muhidin, as well as the Court’s structural and functional officials.

On November 7, 2023, the ad hoc MKMK handed down decisions on ethical violations committed by the constitutional justices. One of the decisions recommended the establishment of a permanent MKMK. After going through and completing various work agendas, the Court unanimously decided to establish a permanent MKMK to accommodate public aspirations and to supervise constitutional justices’ performance as law enforcers.
