JAKARTA (MKRI) — As many as 140 students of fifteen class representative councils (MPK) of Jakarta senior high schools visited the Constitutional Court (MK) on Tuesday, May 9, 2023. They were accompanied by several teachers, among them vice principal of SMA Labschool Jakarta for student affairs. Expert assistant to constitutional justice Muhammad Reza Winata welcomed the students in the Court’s main hall.

In his presentation on “The Constitutional Court Becoming a Modern, Trusted Judicial Institution,” Reza introduced the Constitutional Court to the students as an institution that was established to oversee legal products drafted by the president and the legislative branch and to ensure they are in line with the Constitution. In other words, it is one of the post-Reform institutions established as proof of the state’s commitment to balance state power.

Reza then explained the Court’s authority as a constitutional jurisdiction. “The Court is authorized to review laws against the 1945 Constitution, to settle authority disputes between state institutions, to decide the dissolution of political parties, and to settle disputes over general election results,” he said.

He asked the students the youth’s constitutional rights enshrined in the Constitution. Many students said the right to education, the right to vote when one turns eighteen, freedom of speech, the right to live, and so on. He then talked about 66 of the constitutional rights within the 1945 Constitution.

Among the MPKs visiting the Court today were MPK of SMA Labschool Jakarta, MAN 13 Jakarta, MAN 20 Jakarta, SMA 3 Jakarta, and SMA 8 Jakarta. The MPK is the legislative body within a school that consists of representatives from all classes. It oversees the executive body or the student council (OSIS) and serves to express the opinions of all students.
