JAKARTA (MKRI) The Constitutional Court welcomed the leadership of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) on a visit on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 in the delegation room of the Constitutional Court’s main building. The MPR delegation, led by MPR Speaker Ahmad Muzani, was welcomed by Chief Justice Suhartoyo, Deputy Chief Justice Saldi Isra, and seven other constitutional justices.

One of the key points of the meeting was an agreement to mutually respect each institution’s authority without interfering in one another’s internal affairs. Under the Constitution, the MPR has the authority to amend the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, while the Constitutional Court has the authority to interpret the Constitution. Although the two institutions operate within their respective scopes, both agreed to strengthen communication, particularly regarding constitutional interpretation.

“Up until now, both the MPR and the Constitutional Court have operated within their respective authorities. And we agree that neither the MPR nor the Constitutional Court should interfere with the other’s authority or internal affairs. However, we do communicate with one another to provide interpretations. This is because authority over the Constitution lies with the MPR. Therefore, the institution considered to have the deepest understanding of the Constitution is, of course, the MPR. So, before the Constitutional Court makes a decision regarding that interpretation, we remind them that we will urge them to also listen to the views expressed by the MPR at the time the Constitution was amended,” explained Ahmad Muzani, who met with the press after the meeting.

As a concrete form of cooperation, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Speaker of the MPR and the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court on strengthening coordination and institutional cooperation in the fields of law and the Constitution.

In addition, this visit is also part of the preparations for the MPR’s annual session in commemoration of Indonesia’s Independence Day. In addition to the Constitutional Court, the MPR leadership plans to continue its courtesy visits to other state institutions, including the Supreme Court and the President, as well as to extend official invitations to former presidents and chairpersons of political parties.

“After this, we will meet with the Supreme Court—perhaps next week—and we will meet with all state institutions, including the President,” stated Ahmad Muzani, who was accompanied by other MPR leaders Rusdi Kirana, Hidayat Nurwahid, and Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono.
