JAKARTA (MKRI) – Senior students of SMAN 95 Jakarta visited the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia (MKRI) on Tuesday, February 10, 2026. This activity aimed to provide a closer look at the role and function of the Court as the guardian of the constitution in Indonesia.
This activity featured Senior Legal Analyst Greta Petra Claudia Hutagalung, who explained the background to the establishment of the Court, which arose from the need for a constitutional review mechanism to address laws deemed problematic and inconsistent with the 1945 Constitution.
"Why does Indonesia need a Constitutional Court? Because of the disharmony between existing regulations in Indonesia, between our laws and our constitution, there needs to be a channel for the public to file constitutional reviews," explained Petra while dissecting the amendments to Article 24 of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia. She also detailed the four main authorities of the Constitutional Court, from reviewing laws to resolving disputes over general election results.
Throughout the session, Hutagalung was very active in interacting with the students. The discussion became lively as the speaker provided examples of Constitutional Court decisions that directly impact citizens' rights. Some of these included decisions allowing the use of identity cars (KTP) for citizens who were not registered on the final voter list (DPT) so that the could still be able to vote, as well as the Court's role in ensuring the allocation of 20% of the national and regional budgets (APBN & APBD) to education in order to guarantee the right to education.
Senior students at SMAN 95 Jakarta showed strong enthusiasm, asking questions about the integrity of constitutional justices and the trial process at the Constitutional Court. This two-way interaction made complex legal material easier for the younger generation to understand.
Following the discussion session in the meeting room, the activity continued with a tour of the Constitutional History Center (Puskon). There, the students were treated to a visual presentation of the history of the nation's constitution, from the pre-independence era to the reform era.
"This activity was very good for the students of SMAN 95 Jakarta. Hopefully, the Constitutional Court will invite us again in the future," said Sapri, a teacher at SMAN 95 Jakarta.
This visit is expected not only to provide additional academic insight but also to foster constitutional awareness among students of SMAN 95 Jakarta as future leaders. (*)
