(MKRI), Law Program students of Muhammadiyah University of Gombong paid an academic visit to the building of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia (MKRI) on Thursday, January 22, 2026. The visit aimed to broaden the students’ insights into the role and working mechanisms of the Constitutional Court as the guardian of the constitution.
The activity featured Amriansyah Maulana as the main speaker. In his presentation, Maulana comprehensively explained the strategic role of the Constitutional Court as the guardian of the constitution, the protector of democracy and the state ideology, as well as the protector of citizens’ constitutional rights. He also described the development of the idea of constitutional review globally and historically, including the Austrian Constitutional Court model pioneered by Hans Kelsen, up to the dynamics of establishing the Constitutional Court in Indonesia following the amendments to the 1945 Constitution.
“One of the reasons the Constitutional Court was urgently needed in Indonesia was the fact that many laws had become problematic, yet there was no mechanism to review them, either through executive review or legislative review,” Maulana said during his presentation.
Furthermore, Maulana elaborated on the Constitutional Court’s authorities, which are final and binding, including judicial review of laws against the 1945 Constitution, settlement of disputes over authorities among state institutions, dissolution of political parties, disputes over general election results, and rulings on the opinion of the House of Representatives (DPR) regarding alleged violations by the President and/or the Vice President.
Midway through the session, the activity continued interactively through a question-and-answer segment. Maulana posed several questions about who the justices of the Constitutional Court are, and the students actively responded to his questions.
Through this visit, the Law Faculty students of Muhammadiyah University of Gombong are expected to gain a deeper and more practical understanding of constitutional law, while also fostering awareness of the importance of constitutional supremacy and the principle of checks and balances in state governance.
