JAKARTA (MKRI) — The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia (MKRI) received the representatives of the Iraqi Embassy to Indonesia in a symbolic ceremony marking the admission of the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court to the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent Institutions (AACC) at the hall of the Court’s second building on Thursday, December 4, 2025. The delegation—comprising Head of Mission/Chargé d'Affaires Ammar Hameed Saadallah Al-Khalidy, Second Secretary Zaman Kareem Ali Alsaqaa, and interpreter Omar Hazeim Abdulkarem—was warmly welcomed by Secretary-General Heru Setiawan.
The meeting served as a follow-up to the formal admission of the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court as the 22nd member of the AACC on June 24, 2025. During the courtesy session, Head of Mission/Chargé d’Affaires Ammar Hameed expressed his appreciation for the meeting. He conveyed the hope that the meeting would not only function as a formal acknowledgment of the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court’s entry into AACC, but also as a platform for strengthened cooperation between both courts.
“If possible, cooperation between the two institutions should extend beyond AACC membership to broader inter-institutional collaboration. We also hope that the Chief Justice of the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court can visit Indonesia. Indonesia and Iraq have maintained relations since 1950, so this meeting could serve as an effort to strengthen ties through mutual visits. We would be very pleased to receive delegations from the AACC and the Constitutional Court of Indonesia. The Iraqi Embassy will prepare everything needed for the visit, including protocol arrangements,” explained Ammar Hameed.
During the meeting, Head of Mission/Chargé d’Affaires Ammar Hameed delivered a brief address regarding the admission of the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court to the AACC. Following this, Secretary-General Heru Setiawan delivered a short welcoming remarks on behalf of the Court.
“The admission of the Iraqi [Federal Supreme Court] brings new strength and valuable diversity to the AACC. Iraq’s rich legal heritage, deep judicial experience, and strong commitment to constitutional justice are expected to enrich dialogue and deepen cooperation among AACC members,” he stated.
On this occasion, a ceremonial handover of the Iraqi flag was carried out, after which it was placed alongside the flags of the other AACC member states. The addition of Iraq’s flag symbolizes the welcoming of the AACC’s newest partner in upholding the constitutional values of its member states. The Iraqi Federal Supreme Court’s inclusion in the AACC is expected to open new avenues for cooperation and contribute sustainably to constitutional justice in Asia.
The Iraqi Federal Supreme Court is an independent judicial body functioning as Iraq’s constitutional court, vested with executive jurisdiction to interpret the Iraqi Constitution. Its authorities include determining the constitutionality of laws, reviewing the implementation of federal legislation, resolving disputes between the federal and regional governments, and adjudicating accusations against the president, prime minister, and ministers. The institution also certifies the final results of parliamentary elections and holds the authority to amend regional laws.
