To gain a closer understanding of the Constitutional Court (MK), a number of students from Singapore Intercultural School (SIS) visited the Court on Monday, September 29, 2025. The visit was directly received by Court’s Legal Analyst Arinta Sulistiyo in the Court’s Delegation Room, first building 1. Arinta—known as Tiyo—engaged the students in sharing their initial knowledge about the Court.
“Why does our country need the Court?” Tiyo asked during the opening session.
To clarify this question, Tiyo explained the Court’s duties and authority. He stated that the Court has the authority to review laws against the Constitution; decide on disputes over the authority of state institutions granted by the Constitution; rule on the dissolution of political parties; and resolve disputes regarding election results.
Tiyo further explained that in performing its duties, the Court consists of nine constitutional justices. These justices are appointed through a nomination process by three institutions: the President, the House of Representatives (DPR), and the Supreme Court (MA).
“Those who may submit a petition to the Court include individual citizens, customary law communities, public or private legal entities, and state institutions,” he clarified.
During the interactive Q&A session, one student asked about the selection process of constitutional justices. “How are the nine justices selected? What are the criteria for them to be accepted as constitutional justices?” the student asked.
In response, Tiyo explained that, in addition to being nominated by the three state institutions, prospective constitutional justices must meet the requirements stipulated in Article 15 paragraph (2) of the Court’s Law.
“For example, candidates must hold a doctoral degree (PhD), have an undergraduate degree in law, and be at least 55 years old,” he explained.
As additional information, Singapore Intercultural School (SIS) is an international school established in 1996. The school adopts the Cambridge and International Baccalaureate (IB) curricula, with a mission to equip students to compete globally through quality education and cross-cultural understanding.
