JAKARTA (MKRI) – As an effort to increase public literacy, the Court (MK) held the 2024 Constitutional Court Launch and Talkshow on Constitutional Literacy on Monday, December 16, 2024, at the National Library Auditorium, Jakarta. Deputy Chief Justice Saldi Isra opened this event which was carried out in person and online.

In his remarks, Deputy Chief Justice Saldi said that this launch event was a form of commitment to mobilize internally, in addition to completing work. Since 2019, this joint commitment has been going on from year to year, written by employees within the Registrar's Office and the Secretariat General of the Constitutional Court. He said he didn’t imagine that he would launch 38 books because the Court was faced with a very tough job from March to August 2024, namely handling disputes over the results of the 2024 General Election. "This year we decided on 158 PUU decisions while deciding on the Pilkada disputes that were already in front of us," said Deputy Chief Justice Saldi.

Deputy Chief Justice Saldi hoped that with the limited number of people within the Registrar's Office and Secretariat General, the Court will still be able to continue writing. "Next year, hopefully more books will be launched to the public. "At least the expert assistant to the constitutional justice will produce one book," hoped Deputy Chief Justice Saldi.

Meanwhile,  The Acting Director of the National Library of Indonesia, represented by the Deputy for Library Resources Development, Adin Bindar, said that in accordance with the mandate of the 1945 Constitution, every citizen has the right to participate in making the nation's life more intelligent—one of which is by carrying out this event. Adin added that literacy culture is important to move towards a knowledgeable and creative society. Apart from that, the functions and duties of the National Library are not only limited to serving readers and users. However, he continued, the library is an open space to increase creativity. Library transformation is an effort to educate and build a reading culture. "We interpret this as one of the strategic steps to create high awareness among Indonesian people," said Adin.

Then, Adin expressed his very high appreciation for the efforts initiated by the Court through papers or books for students and the public as well as for the National Library to increase legal dissemination.

Chief Justice of the Court for the 2003 – 2008 period, Jimly Asshiddiqie, who gave the keynote speech, stated that this event was important so that justices were familiar with writing, reading and debating activities. People who are capable of substantive debate are familiar with the culture of reading and writing. "This must become a culture in the judiciary," he said.

Literacy Talk Show

As a series of events, a Literacy Talkshow was also held with resource persons, namely Constitutional Justice for the 2015 – 2020 period and Professor of Law at Udayana University, I Dewa Gede Palguna, Professor of Law at UII, Ni'matul Huda, and Chief Editor of KOMPAS, Sutta Dharmasaputra.

Kompas Editor-in-Chief, Sutta Dharmasaputra, explained that disinformation is one of the top problems in the world. If we talk about disinformation, it can be fought with literacy. According to him, MK is going against the mainstream by launching a book because now social media provides simple things. MK actually launched books—which he called a complex thing—in this era of social media. "Prolonging with simple social media actually makes people forget complex things. "Even though life is a complex thing," he said.

In addition, in her presentation on democracy, UII Professor of Law Ni'matul Huda explained that the large number of judicial review showed that the legislative process was not going well. Parliament has not provided an enlightening color in the context of democracy.

"The Court's position is influential in building democracy as in Decisions 60 and 70. Democracy in Indonesia must begin to organize parliamentary institutions. "Because he/she was elected by the people," explained Ni'matul.
