JAKARTA (MKRI) — Chief Justice Suhartoyo, Deputy Chief Justice Saldi Isra, Secretary-General Heru Setiawan, and Chief Registrar Muhidin met with the national Police of the Republic of Indonesia from several regions on Thursday, February 1, 2024 in the Constitutional Court’s (MK) delegation room. The meeting was aimed at coordinating the security personnel for the 2024 simultaneous general election results disputes (PHPU).

Chief Justice Suhartoyo said the meeting was a routine in every election. The Court does not have sufficient security personnel so it requested the National Police to provide personnel for 2024 PHPU. He asserted that the Police’s contribution is part of the effort to ensure success of the implementation of the Court’s authority over the election.

“Without [the Police’s] assistance, we cannot exercise our constitutional responsibilities peacefully,” he added.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Justice Saldi Isra said the constitutional justices come from various regions. To that end, the Court felt the need to invite Police officials from those regions to coordinate the security amid the 2024 PHPU.

In his presentation, Secretary-General Heru Setiawan explained the Court’s jurisdiction over the PHPU. The effective exercise of this authority requires tight security.

Heru said that after the General Elections Commission (KPU) announced the election results nationally, the Court will work in 3x24 hours to receive the legislative PHPU petitions and 3 days to receive the presidential PHPU petitions. It will then hold hearings since March.

Meanwhile, Chief Registrar Muhidin stated that the Court had anticipated the increase of PHPU petitions. The three presidential tickets would mean the presidential PHPU petitioners could increase from the previous election.

Head of the Operation Control Bureau of the Police Operation Staff Brig. Gen. Endi Sutendi expressed the Police’s preparedness to anticipate any challenges. During the election process, he said, the Police has been performing the Mantap Brata operation 2023-2024. To face the unpredictable, the Police force is prepared to station its personnel in the field.

Meanwhile, head of the Operation Bureau of the Greater Jakarta Metropolitan Regional Police Chief Commissioner Tory Kristianto said he has prepared personnel in the event of escalation. Next, head of the Operation Bureau of the West Java Regional Police Chief Commissioner Budi Wasono said the West Java Regional Police will secure three important locations and the routes of the constitutional justices. He asked for more information regarding the matter.
