JAKARTA (MKRI) — Public relations (PR) in state or government institutions should pay attention the rapid digital developments. PR should make a modern way to maximize social media to build an image and reputation for the institution.

Digital public relations consultant Nurjaman Mochtar said that in this modern era, government public relations still use old methods such as analog television media and newspapers, whereas now all fields are required to work digitally, including government public relations.

“Why government PR is ineffective, I think, because they still use analog PR. Even though we have entered digital era. Analog PR is PR that still adheres to analog TV, the media is still all analog, newspapers still exist,” said Nurjaman at a meeting on public relations and publication monitoring in the meeting room in the Court’s main building, Monday, November 27, 2023.

Nurjaman, who has worked as an editor-in-chief of several national TV media, said that the mainstream media currently takes about 50-80 percent of news material from social media. The speakers or news sources can already convey their own information to the public on their social media accounts.

Nurjaman said that some people no longer use television as a source of information. People can quickly and easily get information or news through social media accessed on smartphones.

“It is estimated that television audience is only 30-40 percent [of the population]. The concept of PR in the future has changed,” he said.

Nurjaman defines PR simply as how public relations team leads the public to perceive the institution positively. The PR team must carry out a communication strategy that can affect public perceptions.

In the PR world, there is no such thing as negative press. Any negative facts should be handled with positive communication strategy so that public perception is positive. “The key is in a positive strategy,” Nurjaman explained.

He also conveyed three things that digital PR can do, such as creating content, managing content, and managing the community. The PR team should make contents interesting and easy to understand so the public is willing to share it with others.

Nurjaman also said that currently public relations teams do not only rely on journalists. This is because they can create their own content to be directly disseminated to the public.
