JAKARTA (MKRI) — A total of 113 students and 12 teachers of SMAN (public senior high school) 35 Jakarta visited the Constitutional Court (MK) for a study tour on Thursday, October 26, 2023. They were welcomed by expert assistant to constitutional justice Abdul Basid Fuadi at the Constitution History Center (Puskon) in the Court’s main building.

The school’s principal Herawati Sihombing expressed that the visit to the Court was to learn about the Court and its legal practice. “We’ve only passed by (in front of the Court) or seen it on television so far, and the Court is a very prestigious state institution. There will be question-and-answer later about the activities, duties, functions, and objectives of the Court because our students like to ask questions,” she said.

Abdul Basid Fuadi began his presentation on the background of the establishment of the Court as well as its authority and obligations. “The Court has the authority to review laws against the Constitution, decide authority disputes between state institutions whose authority is granted by the Constitution, decide the disbandment of political parties, and decide disputes over the results of general elections,” he said.

The Court also has several roles and functions, i.e. the guardian of the Constitution, the final interpreter of the Constitution, the protector of democracy, the guardian of the citizens’ constitutional rights, the protector of human rights, and the guardian of the state ideology.

In addition, Fuad explained about the Constitutional Court as a modern and trusted judicial institution. This is marked by the use of information and communication technology in the hearings long before the pandemic.

After delivering the presentation, Fuad invited the students and teachers to ask questions and engage in an open discussion about various cases under the Court’s jurisdiction as well as resolved cases.

Following that, the students and teachers were invited to explore the Constitution History Center (Puskon) on the 5th and 6th floors. They had the opportunity to observe the different sections within the Center in more detail. They were guided to enter six zones: the pre-independence zone, the independence zone, the 1945 Constitution zone, the zone on the Constitution of the Republic of the United States of Indonesia (RIS), the zone on the Provisional Constitution of 1950, the zone on the Return to the 1945 Constitution, the Reforms zone, and the Constitutional Court zone.
