JAKARTA (MKRI) – The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia (MKRI) received a visit from Ryosuke Iwanami and Eriko of the Embassy of Japan on Wednesday, September 27, 2023. They were welcomed by the acting head of the Public Relations and Protocol Bureau Budi Wijayanto at the AACC Room at the Court’s main building.
On this occasion, Budi conveyed several things such as his wish for improving cooperation between the MKRI and the Supreme Court of Japan. Despite the Supreme Court of Japan not joining the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent Institutions (AACC), there is no barrier for the two institutions to engage in dialogues and exchange ideas in the field of rule of law and human rights enforcement.
“In relation to the AACC, we fully understand the position of the Supreme Court of Japan. However, if you wish, we would be very happy if the Supreme Court can still participate in AACC symposium or short course that we host every year. The Supreme Court can participate but does not need to be a member or be involved in organizational decision-making, but it can still discuss law-related issues as a speaker in the events,” he explained.
The MKRI has had employee capacity building programs with international partners in the United States, the Netherlands, and South Korea. The programs are tailored to the Court’s needs for collaboration with universities and internship programs in judicial institutions. “We hope in the future we can further explore similar cooperation opportunities with the Supreme Court of Japan,” Budi added.
As a conclusion of the visit, the two institutions agreed to continue communication and follow up with more concrete programs. “This meeting is a proof that the relationship between the two countries and the two institutions is very important to us,” Budi concluded. After the meeting, the two representatives of the Embassy of Japan toured the Court’s Pancasila and Constitution Education Center and plenary courtroom.
