BALI (MKRI) — Constitutional Justices Arief Hidayat and M. Guntur Hamzah delivered a public lecture on “Pancasila as a Source for Constitutional Court’s Fair and Constitutional Decisions” at Udayana University, Denpasar, Bali Province on Friday, July 14, 2023.
In his presentation, Justice Arief conveyed the current situation of Indonesia’s young generation. About 63% of Indonesia’s young generation is generation Z. According to him, they have new understandings of how to implement and actualize Pancasila.
He also explained about the current global conditions, which had entered into society 5.0 and industry 4.0, where the influence of social media on the world is extraordinary, giving rise to new paradigms called post-truth and false-truth.
“So, something that is actually wrong, something that is actually not true, if repeated on social media, it can become the truth. Therefore, we must be careful in consuming and posting or channeling news that is circulating on social media, such as in WhatsApp groups or other social media, Instagram and so on. So something that is wrong, something that is not true, something that is called a hoax, if said many times and then consumed by people who are not smart enough, there will be a false truth. Moreover, Indonesia is currently approaching 2024, when many issues could emerge uncontrollably,” he said.
Therefore, Justice Arief advised that in such a situation, it is necessary to spread Pancasila ideology through social media. However, the challenges that we faced today is that posting misinformation on social media is more interesting than posting about truth.
“In the past, people hunted animals, now they hunt followers. In this era, the worse someone gets, the more famous they become. As sane people with reason [should] narrate the ideology of Pancasila, the ideology of Indonesia’s unity, unity in diversity,” he said.
He believes todays is a crucial era in relation to social media, which has positive and negative impacts. “Let’s enhance the positive impact of social media and reduce the negative. Let’s protect the Republic of Indonesia through social media,” he urged.
Ideology Internalization
In his presentation, Constitutional Justice M. Guntur Hamzah mentioned that millennials have a tendency to always look at other countries to compare things with. It is good if it is in the interest of the nation, but if it affects the way we work, think, and act, even indirectly, it may affect the way we understand our nation’s ideology.
“Influence by all kinds of other cultures can certainly affect our mindset. Therefore, we must be able to continue to strive for our identity. So we must understand about ideology,” he said.
He believes that ideology will guide the way we live, work, and achieve the nation’s goals, even how we interact with other countries.
He emphasized that the internalization of ideology to the community can be done by recognizing the core values of the ideology as well as looking for opportunities to act in accordance with the beliefs and values of the ideology, sharing thoughts and ideas with others, reading books and articles about the ideology, and attending events or workshops that focus it.
In his speech, Law Faculty dean of Udayana University, Putu Gede Arya Sumertha Yasa, said the theme of this event was chosen because state development always has threats. “When we talk about Pancasila, we talk about ideology. In the hierarchy of legislation, we can see how Pancasila is the source of all sources of law, which then manifests in every form of legislation. It also serves as the basis for the Constitutional Court’s decisions,” he added.
