MKRI Explores Cooperation with Seoul National University Law School

SEOUL (MKRI) — After attending the 4th International Symposium of the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent Institutions Secretariat for Research and Development (AACC SRD) hosted by Constitutional Court of the Republic of Korea, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia (MKRI) exploring cooperation with the Seoul National University (SNU) Law School on Thursday, June 1, 2023. Deputy Chief Justice Saldi Isra and the MKRI delegation were welcome by Jong-ik Chon (Associate Dean for Academic Affairs), Jaemin Lee (Director of Asia-Pacific Law Institute), Jason (Kye Joung) Lee (former justice), and Guang Wen Jian.

At the meeting, Deputy Chief Justice Saldi Isra explained the MKRI’s cooperation with universities domestically and abroad in the form of recharging programs, internships, joint research, international conferences, and cooperation with international reviewers for the MKRI’s English-language journal Constitutional Review. The deputy chief justice specifically invited professors and legal experts of SNU Law School to attend the 6th Indonesian Constitutional Court International Symposium as well as short course of the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent Institutions (AACC) that the MKRI will hold on August 9-11, 2023 in Jakarta.

The law school’s leaders welcomed the invitation and promised to send at least one expert to share their perspective at the international event. The school also hoped that it will be able to partner with the MKRI in academic and be a destination school for MKRI staff members and Indonesian students to study. SNU Law School is currently the best law faculty in South Korea because most of the country’s constitutional justices are alumni of the university.

At the meeting, Jong-ik Chon also invited Indonesian experts and academics to send their academic articles to Journal of Korean Law by making comparisons between South Korea and Indonesia, whose constitutional systems share many similarities. The SNU Law School’s journal is the only English-language journal that legal experts in South Korea use as the main reference in order to understand the country’s legal system.

The meeting was concluded by a campus tour to visit classrooms, the professors’ offices, and the library. Students who want to pursue studies at SNU Law School, the most prestigious and oldest university in South Korea, must undergo a very strict selection process. This initial cooperation is expected to compel MKRI employees and Indonesian students to study at SNU Law School.
