(MKRI) — National insights, unity, and tolerance are key in the heterogeneous society of Indonesia. The founding fathers, who were members of the Investigating Committee for Preparatory Works for Independence (BPUPK), were a small portrayal of Indonesia. They were able to coexist despite diverse origins, religions, beliefs, thoughts, by producing the nation’s that guides the Indonesian people in running the government.

“The example led by the nation’s founding fathers should be a model for us in running the life of the state, given the era of hate speech and the rapid development of technology. Nowadays, especially entering political year, speech without facts can be a source of division. Therefore, especially students, be careful when going on social media because [what is on them] is not necessarily true,” said Constitutional Justice Arief Hidayat in his public lecture on “Nationalism in Campus: Challenges and Solutions” to Mulawarman University on Friday, May 26, 2023 at the Prof. Dr. H. Masjaya, M. Si. building (Unmul Hub) in Samarinda, East Kalimantan Province. Head of the Public Relations and National Affairs Department Fajar Laksono and Mulawarman University Rector Abdunnur were in attendance.

Justice Arief revealed the implementation of national insights in the Constitutional Court. If the law is implemented only for itself, it will ruin other aspects of life such as social life, religion, and culture, he said. Therefore, he promotes open-mindedness through learning many disciplines. He also said that law must be implemented comprehensively.

He reminded the participants to exercise caution in viewing public information, especially on social media. He said that the precepts of the ideology Pancasila could be the key filter against a barrage of information on the Indonesian and global media.

Instilling Pancasila

In the Q&A session, a student named Carolina asked about the government’s efforts to instill Pancasila. Justice Arief illustrated that the Constitutional Court as the guardian of the state ideology urged the youth to implement the founding fathers’ model in implementing Pancasila values on various interesting activities following the needs in the current era.

“It is not easy to regulate the heterogeneous community using the national ideology. Therefore, character-building is key to implementing diverse Indonesian civilization. The leaders must lead by example so that their subordinates can learn, develop, and implement their example. So, Pancasila education must be practiced starting with ourselves and at home so that it will be a culture that takes roots in the national and state life,” Justice Arief said.
