JAKARTA (MKRI) — In order to provide support to the Majelis Kehormatan Mahkamah Konstitusi (MKMK) or the Constitutional Court’s Ethics Council, the Court inaugurated the council’s secretariat on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at its main hall. The team took an oath under the guidance of Acting Secretary-General Heru Setiawan, with Chief Justice Anwar Usman bearing witness.
In his remarks, the chief justice said that the secretariat team would be supporting the MKMK’s work.
“As the chief justice of the Constitutional Court, I have the responsibility and obligation to keep and guard all and any activities in the Court so that they run as they should. We understand that our beloved institution is facing a challenge. In order to respond to that challenge, the Ethics Council was formed,” he said.
The public at the moment is waiting on the council’s work, despite it having only been formed, which shows the public’s hope on the council and trust in the Constitutional Court. Therefore, the secretariat team must provide optimal support to the MKMK, he said.
“As the chief justice of the Constitutional Court, I have an interest to maintain the work of the MKMK and keep it independent, impartial, and free from any intervention, even from myself as a chief justice and from the other constitutional justices. For now, we give the MKMK our utmost trust so that they can work optimally to resolve the issue mandated to them,” he said.

The chief justice urged the secretariat to work professionally and proportionally, and to have courage to say the truth. “Qullil haqqa walau kana murran. Say what is right even if it tastes bitter. May Allah SWT, the Almighty God, protect us all while doing this noble work of enforcing and guarding the Constitution in this beloved institution,” he stressed.
Before inaugurating 23 in the team, Acting Secretary-General Heru Setiawan expressed his hope that the staff members bear their responsibilities. “I believe you will do your duties to the best of your abilities according to the responsibilities mandated to you. May the Almighty God protect us,” he said.
The Court formed the MKMK January 30 to investigate in Decision No. 103/PUU-XX/2022 on the material judicial review of Law No. 7 of 2020 on the Constitutional Court. Following Article 27A of Law No. 7 of 2020, the council comprises one sitting constitutional justice, one academic, and one public figure.
