BOGOR (MKRI) — One of Indonesia’s foreign policies for 2019-2024 is to increase Indonesia’s contribution and leadership regionally (in ASEAN and Asia Pacific) and globally. Therefore, Indonesia’s active participation in the WCCJ (World Conference on Constitutional Justice) really supported the Indonesia’s global standing, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Director for Legal Affairs and Political and Security Treaties Purnomo Achmad Chandra at the technical follow-up and evaluation meeting of the 2022 WCCJ Congress on Friday, December 16, 2022 in Bogor, West Java Province.
In his presentation on “Indonesia’s Role in the Multilateral Cooperation,” he also explained that based on Law No. 37 of 1999 on Foreign Relations, the ‘free and active’ attitudes and policies towards international issues does not mean being neutral, but emphasizes non-alignment to any world power.
“Free and active also means that Indonesia actively contributes to resolving conflicts, disputes, and other world problems, for the sake of realizing world order based on freedom, eternal peace, and social justice,” he added.
In this first presentation, he also expressed appreciation for the MKRI’s (Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia) active participation outside the WCCJ. He believed the MKRI had succeeded in continuing the founding fathers’ effort of the Asian-African Conference in 1955, when on October 4, 2022 the AACC (Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent Institutions) and the CCJA (Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Africa) convened in a joint conference.
After Purnomo’s second presentation on “The Role of International Treaties in the National Legal System and the Process of International Treaties,” junior diplomat Indra Danardi also shared best practices and experiences in the drafting of international treaties as a member of the Indonesian delegation and the negotiation process that went with it.
Head of the AACC Permanent Secretariat and International Relations Department Sri Handayani closed the meeting by revealing that apart from serving as evaluation, the meeting also served to provide the staff of her department with insights on the preparation of international events and international diplomacy.
The meeting took place for three days from Thursday to Saturday, December 15-17, 2022 for the staff members of the AACC Permanent Secretariat and International Relations Department. During the meeting, the participants discussed “Accountability and Transparency in the Implementation of International Events,” “Indonesia’s Role in the Multilateral Cooperation,” and “The Role of International Treaties in the National Legal System and the Process of International Treaties.”
