JAKARTA (MKRI) — M. Guntur Hamzah took an oath of office as a constitutional justice before President Joko Widodo on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at the State Palace, Jakarta. He was sworn in following endorsement by the House of Representatives (DPR). Following Article 21 of Law No. 24 of 2003 on the Constitutional Court, before taking office, a constitutional justice must take an oath of office according to his religion.
“By Allah, I swear that I will fulfill the obligations of a constitutional judge to the best of my abilities and as fair as possible, uphold the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, and carry out all statutory regulations as accurately as possible according to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, and serve the state and nation,” he said.
After being sworn in, Constitutional Justice M. Guntur Hamzah signed the minute of oath of office of constitutional justice witnessed by Chief Justice Anwar Usman and the other constitutional justices as well as state officials such as DPD (Regional Representatives Council) speaker La Nyalla Mattalitti, chairman of the Presidential Advisory Council Wiranto, and Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD.
Justice Guntur was born in Makassar, January 8, 1965. He received his undergraduate law degree from Hasanuddin University, Makassar in 1988. He received his law master’s degree from Padjajaran University, Bandung in 1995 and earned his doctorate cum laude from Airlangga University, Surabaya in 2002.
His academic career started in February 2006 when he became an administrative law and constitutional law professor at Hasanuddin University as Senior Administrator (Pembina Utama) IV/e. He was the head of the Pancasila and Constitution Education Center; and the head of the Center for Research, Case Review, and Management of Information and Communication Technology. In 2015, he became the secretary-general of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia.
