THE HAGUE, Public Relations—In order to extend the cooperation between the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia (MKRI) and The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS) and as part of the preparations ahead of the fifth congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice (WCCJ), the MKRI delegation led by Chief Justice Anwar Usman made an official visit to the university in the Hague, the Netherlands on Friday, June 24, 2022.
After receiving a warm welcome by the Dean of the Faculty of Public Management, Law & Safety L.M. Bremer in the Mandela Room, Chief Justice Anwar Usman expressed his appreciation for the cooperation between the two institutions for the last five years, especially relating to recharging programs of the Court’s staff members. He said the visit to the university to observe the campus for his staff’s training was his first in his capacity as a chief justice.
Before the faculty members, Justice Anwar also relayed the positive reports by Secretary-General M. Guntur Hamzah of the cooperation between the two institutions. Dozens of staff members, with or without law background, who have had the chance to train at the university, always left positive impressions of the knowledge and experience they gained there.
Upon learning the fact, Justice Anwar stressed his wish that the cooperation between the MKRI and THUAS be continued. He believed it would not only benefit his staff members, but also those in the university.
“This cooperation is also a moment for academics in the Netherlands to learn that the decisions of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia and the administration system behind it is a good role model to refer to in terms of upholding the constitution in the modern era,” he stressed.
He also explained that the MKRI has been preparing to host the fifth WCCJ congress, which he said is the perfect means for the Court to disseminate its decisions to the world so they become references constitutional courts in other countries. Upon discovering that THUAS faculty members were familiar with the Constitutional Court and its decisions, Justice Anwar invited THUAS representatives to attend the congress.
L.M. Bremer said that the cooperation between THUAS and the MKRI for the last five years was an honor for the university. She expressed hope that it would reflect the good relations between the Netherlands and the Republic of Indonesia and their equal positions to look forward to a better future. She also welcomed the extension of the cooperation enthusiastically.
Clair Moore (Program Manager, International and European Law), Michail Vagias (head of cooperation program between the MKRI-THUAS), Joost de langen (The Hague Graduate School) from THUAS as well as Budi Wijayanto (Chief of Protocol), Nallom Kurniawan (researcher), and Immanuel Hutasoit (Head of the International Affairs Division) were in attendance.
The cooperation between the MKRI and THUAS had been going on since 2017. The MKRI had sent its staff members to five batches of collaborative recharging programs and internship programs with THUAS.
Visit to The Hague KBRI
On Saturday, June 25, 2022, Justice Anwar and the MKRI delegation met with Mayerfas. the Indonesia Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands at Wisma Duta RI, the Netherlands, in order to convey the MKRI’s mission in the 5th WCCJ Congress. Justice Anwar hoped the Indonesian Embassy in the Hague could facilitate and support cooperation between the MKRI and universities and the Supreme Court of the Netherlands, which is a member of the WCCJ. In response to this, Ambassador Mayerfas expressed his embassy’s preparedness to not only maintain good relations with institutions that already cooperated with the Republic of Indonesia, but also fully support any future expansion the cooperation.
