BOGOR, Public Relations—The Acting Head of the Pancasila and Constitution Education Center Imam Margono and the Director of the Center for Human Rights Studies of the Islamic University of Indonesia (UIII) Eko Riyadi officially closed the disability awareness training for skilled and responsive services for the Pancasila and Constitution Education Center (Pusdik) on Friday, May 13, 2022 in Bogor, West Java.

In his remarks, Imam expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the UII Center for Human Rights Studies for insights on the disability services. He said that, as the proof of the Constitutional Court’s (MK) seriousness and commitment to protecting human rights, the Court through Pusdik tried to disseminate understanding of constitutional rights to society, including the diffabled individuals. Pusdik was aware that improvements and innovations were needed in its infrastructure and facilities. “Therefore, it would be proposed to the leadership that improvements be made for better infrastructure and facilities for the diffabled,” he said.

At the end of his remarks, Imam hoped that the diffabled individuals who would like to visit or follow training at Pusdik would feel comfortable with its services, as it strived to provide the best and optimum services for them.

Persons with Hearing Impairment

Meanwhile, researcher at the Sign Language Research Laboratory (LRBI) of the University of Indonesia (UI) and member of the association for the deaf Komunitas Handal Tuli Adhi Kusumo Baroto delivered a presentation on hearing impairment and explained that, based on Law No. 8 of 2016 on Persons with Disabilities, persons with disabilities, including those with hearing impairment, have the right to acknowledgement and support for their cultural and linguistic identities. They also have the right to justice and legal protection, access, expression, communication, and information. In this case, professional sign language interpreters and other media are imperative to bridge effective communication.

In addition, he shared tips for better interaction with persons with hearing impairment. First, no assumption about diffabled individuals. Second, talk to persons with hearing impairment directly, not to their companion, assistant, or interpreter. Third, talk to them in a normal volume and try not to raise your voice unless requested. Last, if they cannot understand, do repeat your statement or question calmly and politely.

After the presentation, the participants engaged in simulations of the Court’s services with the assistance of Despan Heryansyah and Eko Riyadi as facilitators.
