JAKARTA, Public Relations—Deputy Chief Justice Aswanto gave a keynote speech at a national seminar by the Forum for Research and Legal Writing (FKPH) of the Student Executive Body (BEM) of the Law Faculty of the Islamic University of Indonesia (FH UII) on Saturday, March 26, 2022 in Yogyakarta. The event was part of the UII Law Fair to compete for the Mohammad Natsir trophy of 2022 under the theme “Quo Vadis - Digital Transformation and National Law Development.”
Justice Aswanto revealed that entering the digital industrial revolution 4.0, the Government was committed to giving more attention to technology, which must make things easier for humankind. In the field of law, he said, the enforcement of the law must also follow the developments of the world and society, for example through remote hearings. Such hearings utilize video conferencing facilities or other electronic media. In response to this, the Constitutional Court also set up Regulation (PMK) No. 1 of 2021 on remote hearings.
“In practice, this technological face challenges, such as failed connection on the end of the petitioner or those attending the hearing virtually. However, the Court make optimum effort to hold the [remote] hearings as it does on-site hearings,” he said before UII Rector Fathul Wahid and participants of the seminar, which take place on Friday-Sunday (March 25-27, 2022) at the auditorium of FH UII.
Responding to such digital disruptions, Justice Aswanto said, the Constitutional Court must continue protecting human rights. Therefore, in order to realize its vision, it provided smart board mini courtrooms to facilitate the petitioners, the relevant parties, and those who need facilities to attend Court hearings remotely from locations near their residences. In addition, collaboration with universities such as UII was expected to be a concrete step to fighting for the neglected constitutional rights of the citizens.
