JAKARTA, Public Relations—Deputy Chief Justice Aswanto officially closed the Constitution Awareness Program for Transformational Teachers Batch I, which was the result of collaboration between the Constitutional Court (MK) and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, on Thursday afternoon, March 17, 2022.
He expressed the highest appreciation to the Transformational Teachers Batch I, saying, “These teachers are extraordinary. Not only teachers, but transformational teachers. I would like to thank [you all, teachers] for taking the time to join this event and discuss with the speakers albeit online,” he said.
He also thanked the leadership of the Constitutional Court, the constitutional justices, and the officials and staff members who participated in the event, as well as the Pancasila and Constitution Education Center for organizing the event. He also expressed regret that it could only take place online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Constitution Awareness Program
Justice Aswanto then explained the meaning of improving the constitution awareness. “Because we believe that [you] are already familiar with what constitutes constitutional rights and how to maintain them,” he said.
He revealed the aspiration to make all citizens understand their constitutional rights and how to maintain them. Hopefully, he said, the transformational teachers’ understanding would be more complete that they had learned other aspects relating to Pancasila and the Constitution.
He then explained human rights and constitutional rights. Human rights, or mensen rechten, and basic rights have fundamental differences, he said. “Theoretically, constitutional rights are the rights one obtains after becoming a citizen of a country. Thus, grondrechten are fundamental or basic rights that become rights because they are regulated in the constitution. Meanwhile, human rights must be protected although they are not regulated in the constitution,” he said.
Human rights, despite them not being regulated in the constitution, are inherent in all humans as God creations, he said. Only humans have such rights.
Constitutional Court
Meanwhile, Acting Head of the Pancasila and Constitution Education Center Imam Margono expressed his gratitude to God Almighty for the success of the event. “By the grace of Allah SWT we were able to organize this event,” he said. He also thanked Chief Justice Anwar Usman for taking the time to participate in the event.
Imam said that the Constitutional Court, as one of the state institutions formed after the Reform era through the amendment to the 1945 Constitution, was meant as a strategic part of restructuring of the state administration system, which includes democratization, the rule of law, as well as guarantee for the protection of human rights and the constitutional rights of citizens.
On this last day of the event, a presentation “The Information System for Electronic Cases” was delivered. In addition, the simulated judicial review petitions by the particpants were also evaluated.
The Constitution Awareness Program for Transformational Teachers Batch I took place for four days, Monday-Thursday, March 14-17, 2022 with 350 participants. Several speakers talked about Pancasila and the Constitution at the event.
