JAKARTA, Public Relations—Constitutional Justices Saldi Isra and Enny Nurbaningsih were panelists at the launch of the book Dasar-Dasar Ilmu Hukum (“Fundamentals of Legal Studies”) by Zainal Arifin Mochtar and Eddy O.S. Hiariej at the Auditorium B of the Law Faculty of Gadjah Mada University (UGM). They attended the event virtually from their respective residences on Saturday, December 18, 2021.
Justice Saldi said that the book was important for all who have concerns for legal studies and for law students. He observed that today students are less enthusiastic in learning the fundamentals of legal studies. He also observed the tendency that graduate and postgraduate law students do not have an undergraduate degree in law.
“[We] can imagine the interest in the fundamentals of legal studies is increasingly low, how they will build legal arguments when they don’t have the foundation. This book is the way the new generation in law redefine the fundamentals of legal studies with language and diction that fit millennials’ needs for legal information. Therefore, I welcome this book as not many people in the field of law who would dedicate their time to write about the fundamentals of legal studies,” he said alongside moderator Wiyanti Eddyono, UGM lecturer.
Justice Saldi added that it was interesting that both authors went out of their way to avoid old methods of talking about the fundamentals of legal studies and provide new perspectives. They tried to introduce new experiences. However, he found inconsistencies, especially in the translation of quotes in other languages. He hoped it could be addressed in the next print.
120 Legal Principles
Meanwhile, Justice Enny commented on the 120 legal principles, which she believed was interesting and important. Both authors, who are criminal law and constitutional experts, wrote the book well. The principles of criminal law in the book will benefit practitioners and lawmakers, she added.
Justice Enny hoped the book would expand the field of law, starting from public and private law, and specific categories therein. She also encouraged other authors to continue the book and write about the principles in law not only in general, but more specific. Hopefully, the fundamentals of legal studies to resolve legal cases are enriched concretely by those who truly understand their use in the field.
