MADRID, Public Relations—Tolerance is one of Indonesia’s strengths, said Chief Justice Anwar Usman during an official visit to the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) to the Kingdom of Spain on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 in Madrid, Spain. He was welcomed by Ambassador Muhammad Najib, who had just been inaugurated by President Joko Widodo at the end of October. “To me, tolerance is one of Indonesia’s strengths that allowed it to survive in today’s challenging era,” he said.

In the discussion session in the KBRI’s meeting room, Justice Anwar explained that anything related to the nation’s integrity and unity are, of course, the obligation of every citizen. Before the embassy’s staff and members of the House of Representatives (DPR) delegation, who were attending an inter-parliamentary conference in Madrid, he added that with tolerance, Indonesia is closer to realizing social justice for all Indonesian people, as explicitly stated in the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia.

Closing his remarks, Justice Anwar said that his official visit was for the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Constitutional Court of Spain. In leading the Constitutional Court’s participation in the international community, he holds on to the principle that one enemy is too many and a thousand friends are too few. He revealed that as chief constitutional justice, he only expressed opinions through the Court’s decisions. Therefore, he needs to exercise caution when issuing statements in public.

Responding to Justice Anwar’s remarks, Ambassador Najib expressed great appreciation and hope that the MoU between the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia and the Constitutional Court of Spain would be immediately followed up with concrete, ongoing programs for the benefit of the two courts and nations.
