BANDUNG, PUBLIC RELATIONS OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT – Secretary General of the Indonesian Constitutional Court officially concluded the 4th Indonesian Constitutional Court International Symposium (also known as 2021 ICCIS) on its final day, Thursday (16/9/2021). The program run for 2 (two) days on 15-16 September 2021 with the theme of “Constitutional Court, Religion and Constitutional Rights Protection” using the hybrid method (combining both online and on-site) from Bandung, West Java while strictly obeying the health and safety protocols.

Hamzah shared that it had been an interesting discussion througout the whole program. The symposium had facilitated 23 speakers covering various topics through a plenary session and 7 (seven) panel session, namely: 1) Jurisprudence of Judiciary and Religious Freedom, 2) Comparative Perspective on Religion and Constitutional Practice, 3) Relations between Constitution, Politics, and Religion, 4) Religious Authority and Reformation of Constitution, 5) Country and Religion in Constitutional Dispute, and 6) Protection of Minority Religion in Islamic Constitutionalism. Both respondents and participants ranging from the academics, practitioners, and policy makers contributed to the fruitful discussion.

“One of the fruitful and interactive discussion was about several cases ruled by the Constitutional Court and Supreme Court regarding constitutionalism and religious freedom in different countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey, and Bangladesh. Additionally, there was also an interesting discussion about how the Constitutional Court’s Decision affects the Islamic law reform, constitutionalism practice and religion in the South Asian region, and the religious freedom in Europe,” he said.

He further explained that Indonesian Constitutional Court believed the importance of human rights development, especially for researchers and registrars, both in terms of case management and decision making process. “We always encourage the researchers and Court’s officers to put an emphasize on academic values which will enable them to give substantial support to the Justices,”

In regards to academic cooperation, he affirmed that the Constitutional Court was always in an open hand to create a fruitful academic cooperation with university and research institution affiliated with the speakers and participants of this international symposium. The Court had maintained a good cooperation with several university such The Hague University and Maastricht University in the Netherlands, Leipzig University and Erfurt University in Germany, Curtin University and Newcastle University in Australia, International Islamic University of Malaysia in Malaysia, as well as several other international institutions such as Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and Rule of Law.

“Additionally, to maintain the Court as a supportive environment for an academic development, we also managed an international journal called “Constitutional Review”. Recently, the journal had successfully been indexed in Scopus, abstracts database and most quoted from peer-review literature. It made the Constitutional Court as the only judiciary in Indonesia publishing a journal indexed in Scopus,” he said.

He also encouraged the speakers and participants of symposium to continue promoting the rule of law, constitutionalism, law supremacy, democracy, and humah rights which would be a blessing for humanity and the world—something that was known as rahmatan lil alamin in the Islamic law.

“I hereby concluded (the program) by extending my gratitude to everyone who had contributed to the success of the international symposium. May this global academic forum would inspire and trigger further and more in-depth research.
