BUKITTINGGI, Public Relations—Any judge who passes judgement not according to their conscience means they are passing judgement on themselves as justice comes from a virtuous heart. Therefore, the highest court is that of conscience, said Chief Justice Anwar Usman on the duty of constitutional justices in adjudicating and deciding on cases at a public lecture at the West Sumatera Muhammadiyah University on Friday, August 27, 2021.

At the lecture on “The Constitutional Court and the Characteristics of the Constitutional Court’s Procedural Law,” he introduced the students the Constitutional Court’s functions as the guardian to the Constitution and the citizens’ constitutional rights. He said that the Constitutional Court was founded based on Article 24C paragraphs (1) and (2) of the 1945 Constitution. The provision granted the Constitutional Court its authority to adjudicate at the first and final level to review laws against the Constitution, to decide on authority disputes between state institutions whose authorities are granted by the 1945 Constitution, to decide on the dissolution of political parties, and to decide on disputes over general election results

“In case of any dispute, the Constitutional Court will adjudicate it. In 2019, the Court has settled general election disputes. However, it must be noted that any court cannot satisfy all parties with its decisions. No judge is able to decide on a case in a way that satisfy every party,” he said before the West Sumatera Muhammadiyah University Rector Riki Saputra, Bukittinggi Precinct police officer Josua Surbakti, and a representative from the Bukittinggi District Court.
