JAKARTA, Public Relations—The Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK) Anwar Usman along with the other constitutional justices attended the state ceremony of the 76th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia on Tuesday, August 17, 2021. Justice Anwar attended the ceremony at the Merdeka State Palace, while the other eight constitutional justices alongside Chief Registrar Muhidin and Secretary-General M. Guntur Hamzah attended it virtually from the Constitutional Court.
Donning the traditional attire of Lampung, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) led the flag-hoisting ceremony. The event took place on premise with strict compliance to the health protocol. Attendees wore masks and observed social distancing. The limited number of the flag-hoisting troop had first undergone health check.
Indonesia’s 76th Independence Day carried the theme “Indonesia Tangguh, Indonesia Tumbuh” (Powerful Indonesia, Growing Indonesia). The theme kept the spirit of not giving up and keep advancing together on a road full of challenges to create a better tomorrow for Indonesia.
“Powerful Indonesia, Growing Indonesia can be achieved by work together hand in hand for one goal. Being tough in the face of the pandemic, being tough when undergoing challenges, and continue to grow to reach the nation’s goals. May the Almighty God always bless and facilitate the efforts of the Indonesian people to achieve the Advanced Indonesia that we aspire to. Long live the Republic of Indonesia! Happy Pancasila State! Happy Independence Day!” the president wrote on his official Instagram account @jokowi.
The Commemoration of the Proclamation of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia began with the report of the ceremonial commander and the sound of cannons blasting seventeen times from the National Monument accompanied by the sound of a long siren. In the ceremony, acting as the ceremony commander was Colonel Pnb. Putu Sucahyadi, who graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1999, currently serving as Operation Assistant of the National Air Defense Sector Command II Makassar.
As the leader of the ceremony, President Jokowi invited the participants, who attended the ceremony on premise and virtually, to observe a moment of silence while the Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas led the ceremony in a moment of prayer.
House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani read out the Proclamation text, which was read out 76 years prior by proclamatory and first President Soekarno to mark Indonesia’s freedom from colonialism.
The leaders of high state institutions also attended the ceremony on premise—People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Bambang Soesatyo, Regional Representatives Council (DPD) Speaker La Nyalla Mattalitti, Audit Board (BPK) Chairman Agung Firman Sampurna, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Muhammad Syarifuddin, Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court Anwar Usman, Judicial Commission Chairman Jaja Ahmad Jayus, Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, and National Police Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo. The Indonesia Tangguh flag-hoisting troop (Paskibraka) hoisted the national flag in the state ceremony at the Merdeka Palace.
