JAKARTA, Public Relations—Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK) Anwar Usman delivered a key lecture for the Law Faculty of the Jakarta Islamic University on Saturday, June 26, 2021. He talked about the legal higher education’s role in producing law-abiding individuals to the university’s law graduate students. The event was entitled “The Millennials’ Compliance with Law in the Face of Industry 5.0.” Jakarta Islamic University law professor Bedjo Sujanto was also in attendance.

He began his lecture by explaining the impacts of the industrial revolution centuries ago. The milestone had significantly impacted research on technological innovations. It accelerated industry and increased production exponentially. The discoveries of a variety of devices and their innovations facilitated humanity. However, it is undebatable that industrial revolution can also override the role of humanity.

“It is important that we adapt to technology and the progress of the times. This is because technological advances that have major impacts greatly affect the generation that lives in an era, including their cultures,” he said.

Legal Responsibility

Justice Anwar then talked about the responsibility of the legal higher education. Indonesia’s young generation, he said, is currently 33.75% of the total population, or 90,450,000—three times as many as Malaysia’s total population. Therefore, the state must focus passing the baton to the millennials. This regeneration should be prepared for continuing the leadership by producing law-abiding individuals.

Justice Anwar said that amid the postmodern era, the rapid information in the media can be misleading and result in social fragments. Not to mention, there is currently a lack of role model among national figures. This concerning condition impacts millennials. Therefore, the legal higher education plays a significant role.

“Rectors, lecturers, and law students are products of the higher education. The nation’s responsibility not only falls on the police and judges, but also on legal higher education because the values taught therein significantly impact its alumni’s social practices in society at large,” Justice Anwar explained.
