JAKARTA, Public Relations of the Constitutional Court—The people’s safety amid the pandemic is crucial, as the Constitution guarantees this, said Secretary-General M. Guntur Hamzah when delivering a keynote speech at a national webinar on “The Protection of Constitutional Rights amid the Pandemic” organized by the Law Faculty of the State Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) on Thursday morning, December 17, 2020.

Guntur said although difficult, in this pandemic the Government determined the missions in protecting the health and safety of the people, including medical personnel, and the social protection for the business sector.

He said good management of emergency situations or COVID-19 must include public transparency where all government policies be shared to the public, so that the government’s actions can be measured. He said emergency and discretionary power during a pandemic and other emergency/crisis situations are justifiable legally, morally, and constitutionally. However, it should not be used to eliminate differing opinions in society.

In addition, Guntur explained that the judiciary serves to provide justice to the public. Amid the pandemic, the Constitutional Court continues to handle the regional head election (pilkada) by offering various services. The Court promotes transparency and opens public access to all case documents and decisions.
