JAKARTA, Public Relations of the Constitutional Court—After protesting the Job Creation Law, workers under the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI), the All-Indonesia Workers Union Confederation (KSPSI), and the National Welfare Movement (Gekanas) came to the Constitutional Court on Monday afternoon, November 2, 2020. KSPSI president Andi Gani Nena Wea and KSPI president Said Iqbal and their entourage were welcomed by Secretary-General M. Guntur Hamzah, Deputy Registrar I Triyono Edy Budhiarto, Head of the Public Relations and Domestic Cooperation Department Fajar Laksono, researcher Pan M. Faiz, as well as Jakarta military commander (Pangdam Jaya) official Major General Dudung Abdurachman and Bareskrim (National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department) officials.

Said Iqbal said they came to consult the Court on the judicial review petition that they intended to file. The organizations hadn’t filed the petition because the norm they intended to challenge had not received a number. He added that they came to the Court to express their stance on the protests on October 6-8, 2020. They intended to fight for their constitutional rights through the Constitutional Court, which they believed to be the bastion of justice for the Indonesian people.

He hoped this statement would be considered by the constitutional justices. In the statement, the organizations requested that the Constitutional Court rule on the forthcoming case with its conscience and conviction based on faith in God Almighty. He hoped the constitutional justices would examine, adjudicate, and decide on the judicial review cases not only based on formal truth, but also on absolute truth.

"We, the Indonesian people, have high hopes for the Constitutional Court to be able to explore, find, and determine the essential truth of the judicial review process," Said said, reading out the workers’ statement in the ground floor hall of the Constitutional Court.

The statement also expressed workers’ hope that in examining, adjudicating, and deciding cases, the Constitutional Court not only relies on the evidence submitted by the Petitioners but also actively explores the material truth of the law, which has been scrutinized by the Indonesian people and the international community.

Secretary-General M. Guntur Hamzah welcomed and praised the organizations’ peaceful protest expressed in the statement. "[You], colleagues will be welcomed as guests with open arms and hearts. This peaceful, orderly expression can be a model on how to convey aspirations properly and in accordance with the Constitution," he said.
