Chief Justice: Court's Cooperation with Universities an Implementation of Constitutional Mandate

JAKARTA, Public Relations of the Constitutional Court—Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK) Anwar Usman congratulated Ahmad Sudiro for his inauguration as a full-time professor of law at Tarumanegara University through a prerecorded video. The inauguration took place at the M Building of Campus 1 of Tarumanegara University (Untar) under strict health protocols on Saturday, October 17, 2020. Constitutional Justice Arief Hidayat and Secretary-General M. Guntur Hamzah also attended the event.

Justice Anwar Usman said that the Court had collaborated with the Law Faculty of Tarumanegara University on several occasions, as part of its commitment with universities. “Some routine activities that have been organized as cooperation between the Constitutional Court and the Law Faculty of Tarumanegara University are the moot court competition to win the Chief Justice’s trophy,” he said.

He added that such activities also include joint research, the provision of research materials for campus researchers who wish to research the Court’s decisions or students who are completing undergraduate or postgraduate studies, publishing of journals, public lectures, internships, seminars, and moot court competitions on the procedural law of the Constitutional Court.

“The cooperation between the Constitutional Court and universities is an implementation of the constitutional mandate, which is to develop the nation's intellectual life,” he said. Justice Anwar also congratulated the university for its 61st anniversary and expressed his wish that the cooperation between the two institutions would continue in the future.

At the event, Professor Ahmad Sudiro delivered a speech on "The Political Transformation of the Law of Justice as the Epicenter of Compensation Settlement Model for Aviation Service Consumers," in whch he highlighted the need to evaluate compensation for aviation service consumers. He believes aircraft manufacturers should be responsible for providing compensation to consumers of aviation services, due to aircraft accidents caused by aircraft defects, as an implementation of the theory of absolute responsibility, taking into account the principles of benefit, justice, and legal certainty.
