JAKARTA, Public Relations of the Constitutional Court—When you have chosen to study law, then love your choice from the heart. Because when it comes from the heart, there will be passion and discipline to pursue all stages of the journey, said Constitutional Justice Enny Nurbaningsih at a Success Learners Training for New Students (PPSMB) of the Law Faculty of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) for the 2020/2021 academic year on Saturday, September 12, 2020.
In the “Inspiring Alumni” session, Justice Enny talked about her journey as a law student at UGM, which was her first choice. Alongside moderator UGM law lecturer Jaya Triyana, she said that she not only study law in the classroom but also explored activism at various in-campus events. She was also part of the student regiment and was sent to East Timor (now Timor-Leste).
“[In the Timor-Leste journey] my mental capacity was tested as discipline was truly applied. This experience has stayed with me until today,” she recalled. L. Amrih Jinangkung was also present to share his experiences as an alumnus.
“Chef in Kitchen of Law”
Justice Enny recalled her stint at the National Law Development Agency (BPHN) as chairman, where she felt she could dedicate her knowledge that she received from her campus. She really applied her studies into law development. “I was like a chef in the kitchen of law. [BPHN] was a fun world. The interactions [at the agency] is closely related to the I’d done for so long in law. This is the truly a relationship between the world of theory and reality,” she said.
She then talked about being appointed a constitutional justice in 2018, which she hadn’t expected. She felt totally comfortable with her work at BPHN, but she then chose to join the selection and was appointed the second lady justice at the Constitutional Court. “When I became a constitutional justice, my world changed. I must learn to close myself off. I am no longer the Enny who can easily go around and discuss with various parties, but now I am a judge who makes decisions. I then cut all relations with various parties because a judge must be in a silent position,” she said.
Maintain Integrity
What has stayed with her as an alumna of UGM Law Faculty is integrity. Constitutional justices must maintain the Court’s honor and enforce justice. She talked about justices’ relations to the executive, such as the president, the DPR (House), the DPD (Regional Representatives Council), etc.
At the end of the session, she gave the freshmen advice and encouragement to not regret their choice to study law in UGM. They have to take the next step in realizing their dreams by studying seriously.
