JAKARTA, Public Relations of the Constitutional Court—The Constitutional Court (MK) collaborated with the Constitutional Law Department of the Law Faculty of the Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) to hold a webinar entitled “Building Harmony between State and Religion in Civil Society” on Friday, July 17, 2020 through Zoom.

Constitutional Justice Wahiduddin Adams was a keynote speaker along with constitutional law lecturer Agus Triyanta, Law Faculty lecturer of the State Islamic University (UIN) Raden Intan Lampung Yasin Al Arif, and Constitutional Court researcher Bisariyadi

Justice Wahiduddin said that the main sources of Islamic teaching are the Qur’an and Sunnah (traditions and practices of the Prophet Muhammad). Both do not cover direct, detailed rules of the state. However, values in society or among individuals such as justice, trust, freedom, and brotherhood can be found in them.

He said that there are two types of separation of state and religion: where it is hostile such as in Turkey, where it is friendly such as in Indonesia. And there is union of religion and state or theocracy. Indonesia is a religious state where the constitution protects the citizens’ rights to believe in and practice their faiths. He said that theocracy used to be strong because in the past state leaders were also religious leaders. Then secularism, he added, was initiated by people in the legal world, as law became science.
