Constitutional Court and Udayana University Hold Constitution Week

BALI, Public Relations of the Constitutional Court—In the effort to improve public awareness of the Constitution, the Constitutional Court (MK) joined forces with the Law Faculty of Udayana University to organize the 2019 Constitution Week under the theme "Grounding the Constitution to Strengthen Youth’s Love for the Nationat the hall of the Law Faculty of Udayana University, Bali, Thursday-Friday (31/10-1/11/2019). This annual event was expected to spread awareness about the constitutional rights of citizens and improve public understanding of legal and constitutional issues in Indonesia.

The two-day event was officially opened by Constitutional Justice Enny NurbaningsihHead of the Public Relations and Domestic Cooperation Department Fajar Laksono and Law Faculty Dean of UdayanaUniversity I Made Arya Utama were also in attendance. In his address, Fajar revealed that theConstitution Week was intended for the people so that there would be no distance between the people and the Constitution. "The momentum of this event is very good if [the people understand the Constitution], because it was made and intended for the people so that there is no distance between the people and their Constitution," he said.

During the event, the participants also received a key lecture delivered by Constitutional Justice EnnyNurbaningsihShe said that constitutional awareness is interrelated with the legal culture developed by the Constitutional Court. "So, we must [be aware of] the Constitution and then we can synergize with each other for grounded programs," he said.

Justice Enny added that today the implementation of the law had undergone changes. However, there must be controlled limitation of power of the executive and the judiciary.

"Because human rights are covered in the amendments to the law and how we implement endorsedpolitical conventions, the only issue is [how to implement a phased socio-cultural system within the state so that we do not let the state get corrupted while fulfilling its [people’s] rights," hadded.

The series of activities held in the Constitution Week include the Scientific Writing Contest (LKTI), Speech Contest, and Book Review. The speakers in the book review program are Constitutional Justices I DewaGede Palguna and Enny Nurbaningsih. The books to be reviewed are entitled International Law: Their Theoretical Aspects and ImplementationsThe Design of Simultaneous Elections Dispute Resolution;Interpretation of the Constitution; Reviewing the Constitutionality and Normality of Norms, The Criminal Justice System; A Breakthrough: Human Rights and International Law in Indonesia; The Anti-Torture Convention of the Constitutional Court and the Dynamics of Its Application; as well as The Ratification of International Treaties; Theoretical, Comparative Approaches, and Judicial Review. (Bayu)
