JAKARTA, Public Relations of the Constitutional Court—On Wednesday (18/9/2019), the Constitutional Court (MK) welcomed 35 students of the Postgraduate Program of Law Faculty of Sebelas Maret University Surakarta (UNS) and 2 lecturers. Researcher Oly Viana Agustine delivered to them a presentation on the constitutional system of Indonesia.

She elaborated the authorities and obligation of the Constitutional Court. The main authority is examining laws against the 1945 Constitution. This is part of the Court’s function as guardian of the Constitution. Regarding the latest issue on the KPK and Criminal Code bills, Oly said, "If the community feels aggrieved by the KPK and KUHP Laws, [they] can immediately file a judicial review petition of the KPK and KUHP Laws to the Constitutional Court."

Oly also mentioned another authority of the Constitutional Court, that is, deciding on authority dispute among state institutions. She asserted that not all state institutions can submit a petition of dispute over the authority of state institutions to the Court. "Only state institutions whose authority is contained in the 1945 Constitution can submit SKLN [institutional dispute] petition to the Constitutional Court," she said.

On the Court’s authority to decide on disputes over election results, Oly explained that the Constitutional Court had just settled disputes over the results of the legislative and presidential elections in the 2019 Simultaneous Elections. "The Constitutional Court successfully completed 260 cases related to Pileg [legislative election] and 1 case related to Pilpres [presidential election]. Alhamdulillah [thank God], everything can be completed in a limited and short time," she said.

After the presentation, Oly opened a question and answer session for the students and discussed the Indonesian constitutional system. The discussion ended and was followed with a presentation of placard by UNS and a group photo. (Louisa/LA)
