YOGYAKARTA, Public Relations of the Constitutional Court—The 2019 Constitution and Anti-Corruption Festival was expected to encourage constitutional and anti-corruption awareness from Yogyakarta for Indonesia, said Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X during the event’s opening on Wednesday (11/9/2019) at Grha Sabha Pramana, Yogyakarta.

The Sultan also said that any person serving in the Constitutional Court may be charged for corruption by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) when committing such a crime. Conversely, the KPK may be warned by the Constitutional Court. “However, if the two are close, the public may worry,” he said.

He also expressed his hope for a win-win solution on the revision of the KPK Law, including with the anti-corruption declaration to be signed today. “We hope the President will accelerate its resolution,” he said.

After delivering his address, the Sultan witnessed the signing of the anti-corruption declaration by Deputy Chief Justice Aswanto, KPK Chairman Agus Rahardjo, MPR Secretary General Ma\\'ruf Cahyono, and UGM Rector Panut Mulyono.

Talk Show

Next, a talk show was held featuring Deputy Chief Justice Aswanto, KPK Chairman Agus Rahardjo, MPR Secretary General Ma\\'ruf Cahyono, and UGM Rector Panut Mulyono with moderator Valerina Daniel. Deputy Chief Justice Aswanto said that the Constitutional Court also had a role in promoting Pancasila and the Constitution. Moreover, the Court has a Pancasila and Constitution Education Center.

"The Constitutional Court is given authorities by the 1945 Constitution so that the state runs well, not only on the shoulders of the Court but also the Indonesian people. Therefore, the Constitutional Court takes the role to promote the Constitution, especially since the Constitutional Court has a Pancasila and Constitutional Education Center, which has produced many alumni," he said before the thousands of students present.

Justice Aswanto explained that the Constitutional Court had a vision as a modern and transparent judiciary and this was a concrete form toward that vision. The Constitutional Court, he added, examines cases without discrimination. "Recently, the Court led by example by winning an award from MURI [Indonesian World Records Museum] as a transparent judiciary. Any citizen who feels aggrieved by the law can submit a judicial review petition to the Constitutional Court. This can be done by the Constitutional Court, refuting the notion that law can be bought or the law is unfair," he said.

Justice Aswanto also revealed that three things need to be considered so that the younger generation not merely serves as a symbol. First, they need to be given correct understanding and education about living as a nation and state. According to him, this reminds the younger generation that an all individuals have rights. "When someone chooses Indonesia as their country, they cannot only recognize human rights (individual rights) but not (understand and) recognize the Constitution as the basis (to recognize the rights of others)," he explained.

He also believed that the younger generation who understood how to live as a nation and state could already be given roles, for which they need to be appreciated for. Do not let their hopes fade, Justice Aswanto said. In the previous segment, he said that a nation that does not know the constitution cannot fight for its rights, which are listed in the constitution itself.

KPK Chairman Agus Rahardjo stated that the younger generation must be able to manage well with integrity and transparency. "Someone with integrity must be honest, work hard, and be trusted. These values in life are beneficial for the journey of this nation," Agus said.

MPR Secretary General Ma\\'ruf Cahyono also stressed his optimism for the younger generation who still possess many anti-corruption characteristics. It is the character of leadership that is the key to the foundation of the characters that identify Indonesia, so it must be religious and competitive.

Ma\\'ruf said that the responsibility of all elements of the nation including institutions and individuals is to do everything so that the younger generation has an ideological orientation. "If the broad dimension of the Constitution is understood by all the people including our young generation, [we] will not lose grip in living everyday life in Indonesia," said Ma\\'ruf.

UGM Rector Panut Mulyono also emphasized the country\\'s future in the hands of his students. "On every occasion I always invite students to say no to corruption, say no to corruption, say no to corruption, say yes to integrity," Panut stressed.

The Constitutional Court (MK), the People\\'s Consultative Assembly (MPR), the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), and Gadjah Mada University (UGM) are collaborating in organizing a series of activities on Tuesday–Wednesday (10–11/09/2019) at Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta.

The Constitutional and Anti-Corruption Festival this time addressed integrity, which was believed to be one of the qualities that must be achieved by all citizens, especially the younger generation. One of activities in the festival was a panel discussion program on Tuesday (9/10) at 08.30 WIB at the UGM Law Faculty Campus. During two days of the activities, an exhibition was also held, participated by the Constitutional Court, MPR, KPK, and UGM as organizers, as well as several NGOs and other institutions at UGM’s Grha Sabha Pramana.

Also announced then were winners of the Academic Constitutional Drafting and the National Constitutional Debate held by the MPR, and the 2019 Constitutional Short Movie competition held by the Constitutional Court. The event also featured standup comedian Pandji Pragiwaksono, who was also a member of the jury for the 2019 Constitutional Short Movie Competition.

The 2019 Constitutional and Anti-Corruption Festival was the fourth collaboration between the Constitutional Court, MPR, and KPK with universities in Indonesia. The same festival was held in 2016 at Hasanuddin University, Makassar, in 2017 at the University of Indonesia, Depok, and in 2018 at the University of North Sumatra, Medan. (Lulu/Tiara/Raisa)
