JAKARTA, Public Relations of the Constitutional Court—The General Elections Commission (KPU) has prepared five attorneys for the 2019 legislative election results dispute (PHPU) hearings at the Constitutional Court, which will commence on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at 08:00 WIB. This was a statement by KPU RI Commissioner Hasyim Asy’ari to the press before officially submitting hundreds of boxes holding written evidence and other supporting documents as the KPU’s response to the 2019 legislative PHPU petitions on Friday (5/7/2019) in front of the Constitutional Court building.

“KPU, at the central, provincial, and district/municipal levels in the locations of the petitions, have prepared responses, [statements of chronological events], and evidence in the form of letters or texts,” said Hasyim, who arrived at the Constitutional Court with KPU Commissioner Wahyu Setiawan and KPU attorney Ali Nurdin.

Hasyim admitted that the legal team would be divided, where some handle political parties while others handle petitions filed by Regional Representatives Council (DPD) candidates.

Relevant Witnesses

Hasyim revealed that after the preliminary examination of the 2019 legislative PHPU, the KPU would observe the arguments of the Petitioners. They would then prepare relevant witnesses to the arguments.

“We will make strategies, whether or not witnesses are necessary. [We will] of course prepare relevant witnesses, such as former officers of polling station working committee (KPPS), Sub-district Election Committee (PPK), District/Municipal KPU who directly witnessed the incidents argued by the Petitioners. So far, the KPU has not revealed it. For sure, the KPU has prepared various documents in relation to voting at all levels,” Hasyim explained.

Prepared

KPU Commissioner Wahyu Setiawan emphasized that the KPU RI along with the Provincial and District/Municipal KPU, and their legal team, are prepared to follow the legislative PHPU at the Constitutional Court. The KPU, he added, would try to maintain the voting results that had been validated at every region.

“The documents to be submitted are hundreds of boxes, and [we do not deny] the possibility of more [documents]. These pieces of evidence consist of documents according to the issues being disputed,” Wahyu added.

Ali Nurdin supported Wahyu’s statement that the KPU would prepare attorneys from each office. In addition, his camp is prepared with evidence to counter the Petitioners’ arguments.

The Constitutional declared today, Friday, July 5, 2019 the deadline for the KPU to submit its response to the petitions filed by 2019 legislative election contestants. (Sri Pujianti/NRA/Yuniar Widiastuti)
