JAKARTA, Public Relations of the Constitutional Court—The Constitutional Court (MK) welcomed the Central Information Commission (KIP) on Thursday (20/06/2019). The KIP visited the Court to find information for the publication of its magazine. The commission had previously visited the Court last Friday (14/06/2019). Both visits discussed information transparency of the Constitutional Court.
Head of the KIP’s Research and Documentation Division Romanus Ndau said that his team was putting together the first KIP magazine, which would cover the Constitutional Court. “Currently the Constitutional Court is the center of public attention because of the 2019 elections results dispute (PHPU). It is interesting if we cover the Constitutional Court,” Romanus said.
The KIP delegation consisted of three persons, Romanus and two of his staff members. They were welcomed by Secretary General of the Constitutional Court M. Guntur Hamzah and Head of the Public Relations and Protocol Heru Setiawan at the Delegation Room on the 11th floor.
Guntur explained that the presidential election results dispute (PHPU) would finish on June 28, 2019 at the latest. As such, the ruling could be made earlier. “The deadline is set. However, the [date of the] ruling depends on the proceedings,” Guntur said.
Meanwhile, the registration of the legislative PHPU will begin on July 1, 2019. The proceedings will finish in 30 workdays at most. Therefore, it must be resolved by August 9, 2019.
“We decide [on cases] swiftly as we are trying to become a judiciary of speedy trial,” he affirmed.
Currently, the Constitutional Court has received 263 petitions of the 2019 legislative PHPU. The number declined from the previous election, which recorded 269 cases. The 2019 legislative PHPU cases reached 1,093, an increase from the 996 cases in 2014.
Guntur said there was no special preparation ahead of the proceedings. The constitutional justices remain steadfast according to the due process of law. The Court had improved its preparation in terms of employees and infrastructure, by adding facilities such as LCD displays at several points to display the proceedings.
Before concluding the discussion, Guntur stressed that the Constitutional Court had set high standards of information transparency. This is a requirement so that the Court be a credible institution that the public trusts. “We share the same spirit with the KIP, where transparency is nonnegotiable,” he said.
