Indonesia Appointed Host of 2020 Judicial Conference of OIC Countries

Indonesia was appointed host of the Judicial Conference 2020 in the meeting attended by the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court, the Constitution Council, and equivalent highest judiciary institutions of 42 member countries of the international Islamic Cooperation Organization (OIC) in Istanbul, Turkey on Saturday (15/12).

The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia (MKRI) was also appointed one of the Working Committee members along with Turkey, Algeria, The Gambia, and Pakistan to prepare the format and forms of cooperation in judiciary that will be developed among the OIC members.

The two strategic decisions were taken after the Chief Justice of the Turkish Constitutional Court Zühtü Arslan as chairperson of the meeting had listened to various views and input from the heads of the OIC delegations, representatives of international organizations, and the Association of Regional Constitutional Courts. 

"The next Judicial Conference will be held in Indonesia under the patronage of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia." Member countries of the Working Committee will also prepare reports to the delegates regarding the format and forms of cooperation that we will agree on later," Zühtü Arslan concluded the results of the meeting. 

In The First International Conference of the Constitutional/Supreme Courts of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Member/Observer States (J-OIC), delegates of the OIC countries also delivered materials in three separate sessions, under the theme “The Role of Higher Judiciary in Protecting the Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights.

The delegation of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia led by Head of the Pancasila and Constitution Education Center Budi Achmad Djohari delivered the paper entitled “The Role of the Constitutional Court in Protecting Fundamental Rights in Indonesia.

This first meeting initiated by the Turkish Constitutional Court was aimed at exchanging the best experiences in terms of protecting the principles of the rule of law and fundamental rights, both those carried out by the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court, the Constitutional Council, and the highest judicial institutions of the OIC countries. Meanwhile, OKI is the second largest international organization in the world after the United Nations. (MN/LA/Yuniar Widiastuti)
