67 students of the Islamic University Sunan Ampel Surabaya (UINSA Surabaya) visited the Constitutional Court on Wednesday (7/11/2018). UINSA constitutional law lecturer Arif Wijaya who accompanied the students revealed that the visit was a field study for 5^th and 7^th semester students.

“The students [are learning constitutional law theories, state law, and constitutional law. Therefore, we made a visit to understand how the Constitutional Court performs its duties and functions in implementing constitutional law,” he explained.

Court researcher Oliviana Agustine welcomed the Constitutional Law and Law Study Program of the Sharia and Law Faculty of UINSA and delivered a presentation on the constitutional system in Indonesia. She appointed two students to simulate judicial review done in the Court. With the help of those students, she explained the proceedings in the Constitutional Court, starting from preliminary hearing, petition revision, examination hearing by questioning experts and relevant parties, up to ruling hearing.

Through the simulation, Oliviana hoped the students would be able to fully grasp the concept of the Constitutional Court’s four authorities and one obligation as Indonesian judiciary that is tasked with guarding the Constitution and state ideology. “Hopefully by understanding the procedural law in the Constitutional Court, you will be able to understand your constitutional rights, because in filing for a case in the Court you do not have to be assisted by an attorney and the process is free of charge,” she explained.

After the presentation, all students and assisting lecturers were taken to the Constitution History Center to learn about the history of the Indonesian Constitution. (Sri Pujianti/LA/Yuniar Widiastuti)
