Worldwide Constitutional Court Conference: Say Yes for Independency

Seoul - Issues about Constitutional Court independency mills around in the 3rd Congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice 2014 which took place in Seoul, South Korea. Apparently, the issue of independency is shared in common, given Constitutional Court’s role that mainly determines the progress of national development.    

The independency issue was delivered by Peter Paczolay, Hungary Constitutional Court Chief Justice. In his speech, Pazcolay delivered several implicated and factual points related to Constitutional Court’s independency, occurred all around the globe.

Constitutional Court, according to Paczolay, may be pressured by other branches of power, as well as media intervention. Other powers resistances toward Constitutional Court decision also challenged MK in complying its duty. Resisted powers usually refuse to comply the decision, as what happened to Mongolia’s Constitutional Court. He suggested that Constitutional Court must emphasize its role in enforcing democracy and the rule of law.

Besides, Paczolay also emphasize the importance of cooperation, domestic or international. Such cooperation, according to him, will support other institution, merely when its effort being challenged.

The speech sparked responses for other delegations, at least delegations from 10 countries took turns in delivering their experiences. It aligned with the main purpose of the conference, experience sharing and shared to-be-adopted implication.

The meeting was held in Sept. 31 in Shilla Hotel. The 3rd Congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice 2014 was also attended by Republic Korea President Park Geun-Hye, who also delivered opening speech for the main event. UN Secretary-general, Ban Ki Moon also gave opening speech via 15-minute length recorded video.(FLS/mh)
