University of Indonesia the Winner of Constitution Debate Competition 2012

The debate team of University of Indonesia came out as the first winner in the Competition Constitutional Debate Higher Education as National Indonesia Year 2012. UI debate team managed to overthrow the Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University (Untirta) in the final round on Monday (25/6) in the Plenary Session of the Constitutional Court. The final round this time guided by Fessy Alwi and aired by Metro TV on Wednesday (27/6) evening.

The UI Debate Team consists of Lutfi Sahputra, Varida Simarmata Megawati, and Nur Widyastanti. While the debate team consists of Eli Untirta Ermawati, Nur Alhasymmie Latifah, and Richa Septiawan.

On occasion, Untirta debate team get pro position, while the UI counter debate team. The problems discussed are the rise in price of fuel oil. In other words, in this case Untirta agree with the fuel price increases, while the UI debate team did not agree.

The road is quite exciting final. Each of the finalists had to prepare materials and their respective arguments to break his opponent’s arguments. Untirta, for example, asserted in his opening argument that in terms of increased fuel prices, the only purpose of government is to realize the welfare of the people as expressed in the Constitution.

"The government needs to make inroads," said the first speaker of Untirta. "States are required to take a realistic policy for the welfare of the people."

According to him, there are several reasons why the price of fuel it needs to be raised. First, the subsidy for fuel as long as it is right on target. Second, the rise in fuel prices in line with the policy of saving oil resources. And third, more precise fuel subsidies diverted to the development of infrastructure or other sectors.

On the counter, UI debate team also has at least three arguments basis. First, the fuel price increase has a state goal of creating injure the general welfare. Second, the policy would only decrease the growth and development of the national economy. "The third is that this policy will turn off the productivity of the people of Indonesia," said one member of the UI debate team.

Worse yet, according to UI debate team, of fuel price increase by the base following the world oil prices, also contrary to the Constitutional Court’s decision stating that the determination of oil prices should not be left to market mechanisms. And should, according to them, in this context the Government can protect the people, but unfortunately the opposite is true.

After debating about half an hour, punctuated by three questions deepening of the jury, the final jury Saldi Isra presents to announce the winner of the competition. According to Saldi, the participant has to provide the best and gives quite a debate over the issue of fuel price increases that are being hotly discussed these days.

 

Champion of the Third and Fourth

In addition to awards for first place and second, on the same occasion, conducted also won an award for the third and fourth. The third winner is the winner of the debate team from the University of Hasanuddin. Meanwhile, as the fourth champion, is the General Sudirman University.

In brief remarks, Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Moh. Mahfud MD viewed, the debate competition this time participants were at least have the intelligence, accuracy, and agility. "At least one of the three," he said.

But keep in mind; continued Mahfud, in education and law enforcement not just that it takes. No less important is the ability to think is offset by the purity of conscience. "The importance of keeping the brain and character," he said. Finally he congratulated the winners of competition debate.
