HOUSE STATED JIMLY, MAHFUD & AKIL PASSED THE SELECTION

Voting for the selection of Constitutional Court Justices held by the House had ended. Commission III of the House had decided the three candidates to sit as the justices of the Constitutional Court, they are Mahfud MD, Jimly Asshiddiqie and Akil Mochtar.

From the voting result, member of the House from the National Awakening Fraction, Mahfud MD got 38 votes, meanwhile the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Jimly Asshiddiqie got 37 votes. In the third place was a representative from the Working Group Fraction (FPG), Akil Mochtar with 32 votes. Three of them had casted out the other thirteen candidates taking part to struggle for a position of a constitution justice from the House.

"Hence, the three candidates passed from the House element are Mahfud MD, Jimly Asshiddiqie and Akil Mochtar," said Head of Commission III Trimedya Pandjaitan in the House of Representatives Building, Senayan, Jakarta, Friday (14/3/2008).

For the candidate with the most votes, besides Jimly, will be directly decided as a constitution justice because there will be a constitution justice entering his retirement period on March 1, 2008.

The voting for the constitution justice was attended by all the 49 members of Commission III. They will decide the three candidates to fill the position of constitution justices during 2008-2013.

In the Constitutional Court there are nine justices working. Three justices were chosen by the Government, then three other candidates were chosen by the Supreme Court while the rest were chosen by the House of Representatives. (nal/fay)
