THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT RECEIVED A VISIT BY GPI AND PII

The Constitutional Court received a visit by 50 members of Islamic Youth Movement (GPI) and Indonesian Islamic Student (PII) led by Joko Riskiyono, Thursday (14/6), at the Hall of the Constitutional Court on the 4th floor of the Court’s building. The team was received by an Expert Staff of the Constitutional Court, Machmud Aziz and the Head of Cases and Hearing Administration Department, Muhidin.

Joko explained that the purposes of this visit were to understand the duties and authorities of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia, to induce constitutional awareness among young generations and students, particularly the members of GPI and PII of the Greater Jakarta, and to disseminate the information about amendments to the 1945 Constitution.

On this occasion, Machmud Aziz explained the process of the formulation of the amendments to the 1945 Constitution as well as the functions and authorities of the Constitutional Court. With respect to the authorities of the Constitutional Court, Aziz explained that the Constitutional Court has 4 authorities and 1 responsibility as stipulated in the 1945 Constitution. The Constitutional Court has the authorities to hear cases at the first and final level the decision of which is final in nature to hold a judicial review of Laws against the 1945 Constitution, to decide upon disputes on the authorities of state institutions whose authorities are granted by the 1945 Constitution, to decide upon the dissolution of political parties, and to decide upon disputes on general election results.

“In addition, the Constitutional Court is required to make a decision regarding the People’s Legislative Assembly’s opinion on alleged violations committed by the President and/or the Vice President in the form of treason against the state, corruption, bribery, other gross criminal acts or condemned acts, and/or on the assumption that they are no longer comply with the requirements for President and/or the Vice President as intended in the 1945 Constitution,” Aziz explained.

In the meantime, Muhidin explained the legal process in the Constitutional Court from the filing of petitions up to the hearing process. Muhidin confirmed that legal actions in the Constitutional Court are free of charge. In fact, every decision of the Constitutional Court which has just been read can be directly accessed through the website of the Constitutional Court on the same day.
