Deputy Chief Justice Saldi Isra attending the Opening of the Legal Year 2024 on invitation from the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Royal Court of Justice, Tuesday (1/10).
London, MKRI—Legal practitioners of England and Wales officially opened the Legal Year of 2024 in London on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, through a centuries-old tradition ceremony.
The start of the legal year was marked by a religious ceremony in Westminster Abbey, with the arrival of the Judges from the Royal Court of Justice, and closed by a reception dinner at the Houses of Parliament. The Westminster Abbey ceremony was rooted in the religious practice of judges praying together for guidance at the start of the legal session.
Deputy Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Saldi Isra, was among the distinguished guests of the solemn ceremony. The Deputy Chief Justice was specially invited by the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales as a guest outside the jurisdiction of Great Britain. The event was attended by 600 guests, consisting of judges of Great Britain, senior officials of the judiciary, royal law officials, senior lawyers, judges from the European Courts, and government ministers.
After the ceremony, the judges of England and Wales, wearing their gowns, walked to the Houses of Parliament, where the Lord Chancellor welcomed them for a breakfast reception.
The breakfast tradition started in the 16th century when all communion participants were obliged to fast before a court session. Then, it became a tradition for the Lord Chancellor to offer meals to judges before they entered the High Court.
On a different occasion, Deputy Chief Justice Saldi Isra, accompanied by the Head of Research, Case Review, and Library Management Center, Pan Mohamad Faiz, also attended an invitation from the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office in a special courtesy meeting with the Lady Chief Justice, Dame Sue Carr, the Right Honourable Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, alongside other judges from Great Britain, Albania, Brunei Darussalam, Jamaica, Mauritius, and Spain.
The meeting opened a new network of cooperation between the Constitutional Court and the Royal Court of Justice in England, as well as other judicial institutions from various countries, to share judicial practices in their respective countries. (*)
