Court Holds Bilateral Meeting with Uzbekistan’s Constitutional Court for AACC Leadership Succession

TASHKENT (MKRI) — The delegation of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia (MKRI) led by Constitutional Justice Anwar Usman had a bilateral meeting with the Constitutional Court of Uzbekistan on Monday, July 22, 2024, at the international conference room of the main building of the Constitutional Court of Uzbekistan in Tashkent. The two institutions convened as the presidency of the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent Institutions (AACC), currently held by the Constitutional Court Thailand, will be transferred to the Constitutional Court of Uzbekistan in 2025. Justice Anwar Usman received a warm welcome from Chairman Abdusalomov Mirza-Ulug’bek Elchiyevich and his ranks.

As the Permanent Secretariat of AACC, MKRI actively communicates with and provides assistance to other member countries’ Constitutional Courts. This aims to maintain AACC's continuity as an organization of judicial institutions at the regional level in Asia and its role in various international forums. It is noteworthy that MKRI is one of the founding members of the AACC.

The delegation of MKRI, led by Justice Anwar Usman, explained that their visit to Tashkent was to affirm MKRI’s support for the Constitutional Court of Uzbekistan in taking over the leadership of AACC in 2025. In response, the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Uzbekistan, Abdusalomov, stated that they greatly need MKRI’s assistance in the transition process of AACC leadership. Abdusalomov acknowledged that the Constitutional Court of Uzbekistan has learned much from MKRI’s experiences. Consequently, Uzbekistan’s Constitutional Court intends to emulate MKRI’s rules and practices through proposed constitutional amendments currently under discussion in Uzbekistan.

Besides recounting the historical relationship between Indonesia and Uzbekistan up to the present, the Constitutional Court of Uzbekistan expressed profound gratitude for MKRI’s visit and promised a reciprocal visit to MKRI. Concluding his remarks, Abdusalomov expressed hope that the Constitutional Court of Uzbekistan and MKRI could strengthen their cooperation by establishing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions.

The MKRI delegation expressed profound gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the Constitutional Court of Uzbekistan and welcomed Abdusalomov’s proposal for drafting an MoU. The bilateral meeting was followed by a working-level meeting in the evening to discuss the technical preparations needed by the Constitutional Court of Uzbekistan for the leadership succession process, as well as their duties and responsibilities after their term of presidency concludes.
