Mahfud MD: The Current Problem faced by the Indonesians is the Enforcement of Justice

The Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Moh. Mahfud MD, as a guest star in a TVRI program.

Jakarta, MKOnline - The Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Moh. Mahfud MD, said that since the political reform in 1998, Indonesia has focused more on specific duties related to the issue of state defense and security. In such context, the function of defense is performed by the Indonesian National Army (TNI).

“To put it simply, the function of defense is related to defend state’s sovereignty. Nowadays, conventional wars by using weapons and bullets almost do not exist,” Mahfud said when he became a resource person in a TVRI program with the theme “65 Tahun TNI”, on Thursday evening (9/23).

Then, what is the challenge faced by state defense in order to achieve a unitary state? According to Mahfud, from the legal perspective, the current problem faced by the Indonesians was the enforcement of justice.

“The enemies are not from the outside, but from the inside. We might destroy ourselves, if laws and justice are not properly enforced,” said Mahfud in the program hosted by a moderator who is also an ex-actor, Slamet Rahardjo.

Mahfud said, that at present defense, in its actual meaning, does not only become the sole responsibility of the Indonesian National Army, but it must be in synergy through transparency in the government or the enforcement of law and justice.

“In my opinion, the enforcement of law and justice in this country poses a very serious problem,” added Mahfud who was also accompanied by another resource person, Arswendo. (Nano Tresna A/Koen)
